Santa Maria

On Sal Island, Santa Maria invites you to experience the warmth of Cape Verdean culture amid white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. A vibrant destination where the Atlantic blends with the joy and colour of Africa, and where the characteristic morabeza, the Cape Verdean art of hospitality, is ever-present.

Founded by the Portuguese in the first half of the 19th century as a salt export hub, the raw material that gave the island its name. Today, the vibrant centre of Santa Maria pulsates with the lively rhythm of its numerous restaurants and bars. The soul of the town resonates with the melody of Morna, which lulls the late afternoons in the seaside bars, dancing along the coast as the sun sets.

The Santa Maria Pier is the most popular tourist spot in the village and a genuine sight. It is here that, every day, fishermen return from the Atlantic in their brightly coloured boats, unloading fresh fish.

Santa Maria Beach, stretching over 8km, is a long stretch of fine white sand. Bathed by warm, crystal clear turquoise waters, it is excellent for water sports such as diving and snorkelling. The Atlantic wind also attracts many surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Finally, visit the salt pans, which were once crucial to the island’s economy. Today, you can bathe in these waters and experience how the high concentration of salt makes it impossible to sink.
